The fact that changes everything: on the most common route — employed work — the procedure is opened by the Spanish company, not by you. Without an employer prepared to file, this door does not open through candidate effort.
The three routes
Employed (with a Spanish employer)
You hold a job offer from a company in Spain, and the company applies for the residence and work authorisation. Once granted, you apply for the visa at the consulate. It carries the highest volume — and depends entirely on a third party acting.
Self-employed
For people setting up or running their own business. It requires a business plan, evidence of viability, planned investment and compliance with the legal requirements of the activity itself. More work to assemble, but it does not depend on an employer.
Job search
Routes exist for specific profiles; this is not a general permission open to anyone. Confirm eligibility before organising a move around it.
Why many applicants end up on a different visa
Because this route requires someone else to act. People working remotely for foreign clients usually find a more direct path through the digital nomad visa; people with passive income through the non-lucrative visa; and people who want to enter through education and build a career afterwards through the student visa.
That is not discouragement, it is sequencing. Taking the route that is viable now usually beats waiting indefinitely for an offer that comes with a willing employer attached.
A note on transparency. The work routes vary considerably in requirements, amounts and timelines depending on profile, autonomous community and occupation. Rather than publish figures that may not hold for your case, we cite here only what is stable across all of them and look at the specifics with you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move to Spain to look for a job?
Only through specific routes and for eligible profiles — there is no general permission to enter and job-hunt. Arriving as a tourist to look for work creates no right of residence.
Who applies for the employed work permit: me or the company?
As a rule the Spanish employer starts the authorisation procedure; only afterwards do you apply for the visa at the consulate. Without an employer willing to do that, this route does not move — no amount of effort on your side substitutes for it.
What if I want to start my own business?
There is a self-employment route, which requires a business plan, evidence of viability, planned investment, and compliance with whatever the intended activity itself requires.
Does remote work for a foreign company count as a work visa?
No. That is the digital nomad visa, with its own rules — including the requirement that the income originate outside Spain.
Why don't you publish salary thresholds on this page?
Because they are not stable across the routes. Requirements, amounts and timelines vary by profile, by autonomous community and by occupation. Publishing a number that does not apply to your case is worse than publishing none.
